Dental Surgery

At Portland Oral and Maxillofacial, we understand the importance of having an expert oral surgeon perform more complicated dental procedures. While a general dentist is an expert at keeping your teeth and gums healthy, there are certain types of procedures that they do not perform because they require additional training and experience. Dr. Collett, along with our highly trained staff, provides a wide range of oral surgical procedures. We provide services throughout the Portland ME area and patients trust us to take care of their oral health because we are the best oral surgeon in town.

Dental Implants

At Portland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Collett performs cosmetic dental surgery for patients that are looking to restore missing teeth or improve their smile. Missing teeth can be embarrassing, causing people to hide their smile and lose their self-esteem. The space created by missing teeth can easily become infected with bacteria, cause other teeth to shift out of place, and make it difficult for people to speak or eat correctly. Dr. Collett and our staff are sensitive to the hardship a missing tooth can cause. We provide dental implants so our patients can regain their self-confidence, improve their health, and approach life boldly. If you are suffering from missing teeth, we can help you by transforming your smile using implant dentistry, and for those that prefer dentures we offer a hybrid procedure. Call us at (207) 772-8055 to schedule an appointment and let us transform your smile into one that you are proud to show.

Pediatric Oral Surgery

Dr. Collett performs pediatric oral surgery on young patients that have impacted teeth, need a wisdom tooth removed, or have other complex dentistry needs. He works with local dentists to coordinate patient care to ensure that the surgical procedures and ongoing maintenance will work together to take care of a child’s oral health needs. Dr. Collett is an attentive pediatric oral surgeon and helps young patients and their parents to feel comfortable with the procedure.

Bone Grafting

Dr. Collett performs bone grafting when a patient needs to have their bone structure improved or reinforced. Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw. The bone is obtained either from your own bone (autologous bone) or allograft (human bone from tissue bank). Dr. Collett can also perform more complex bone grafting procedures when it is needed for a patient. He can take a bone graft from the patient’s own hip in order to obtain the proper amount of replacement bone. Hip grafting procedures take place at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME where Dr. Collett is currently Chief of Oral Surgery.Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone is obtained either from a tissue bank or your own bone. Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw.

Orthognathic Surgery

Dr. Collett also performs Orthognathic surgery on patients to correct conditions of the jaw and face that are related to structure, growth, malocclusion problems, and other orthodontic problems that cannot be treated with braces. Dr. Collett along with our surgical orthodontic coordinator will work with the patients to help make this process as smooth as possible. These procedures are more complex and are done at Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME.

Surgically Assisted Rapid Palate Expansion

surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (S.A.R.P.E.) is a combined orthodontic and surgical procedure which facilitates an increase in transverse maxillary width both in children and adults. The procedure is generally done because the upper jaw does not expand enough during development in order to accommodate all its teeth in the dental arch causing significant crowding and misaligned teeth. Our surgical technique is minimally invasive, which allows Dr. Collett to perform the surgery in the office under general anesthesia.

Wisdom Teeth

Patients throughout the Portland area trust Dr. Russell J. Collett to remove their wisdom teeth when they’re impacted, causing pain, creating a site for infection or are the source of dental crowding. Wisdom teeth extraction typically requires the expertise of an oral surgeon simply because wisdom teeth are so easily impacted. They can grow in sideways and underneath the gum line which makes it difficult for a general dentist to remove them. When wisdom are not causing pain, have fully erupted and do not cause dental crowding, infection and oral problems, Dr. Collett may advise against having them extracted. Each patient is evaluated and as with any surgical procedure offered by Dr. Collett, the risks and benefits of surgery are carefully considered.

Facial Trauma

Patients that experience a facial trauma can turn to Portland Oral and Maxillofacial to improve their appearance and the functionality of their jaws and teeth. There are a number of possible causes of facial trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, accidental falls, sports injuries, violence, and work-related injuries. Types of facial injuries can range from teeth injuries to extremely severe injuries of the skin and bones of the face. Dr. Collett can use a variety of procedures, including bone grafting and dental implants to help patients that have experienced a recent trauma or accident.

Exposure and Bracket Surgery

There are instances where patients have adult teeth that have become impacted above the gum line and need to be guided into their proper position in the maxillary or mandibular arches. Dr. Collett will work closely with the patient’s orthodontist to help with the eruption of the impacted teeth. In a simple surgical procedure performed in our office, the gum on top of the impacted tooth is lifted to expose the hidden tooth. Once the tooth is exposed, the oral surgeon bonds an orthodontic bracket to the exposed tooth and attaches a chain to the bracket. The oral surgeon guides the chain to the orthodontic arch wire, where it is temporarily attached. Shortly after the procedure the patient will return to his or her orthodontist where they will begin the process of moving the tooth. As a dental surgeon, we understand that every patient’s financial situation is different. We accept most dental insurance, cash, credit cards, and even accept financing through CareCredit. Call our office at (207) 772-8055to discuss payment options for your individual needs.
